Charred Timber Cladding – Shou Sugi Ban®
Exterior Solutions supplies our Shou Sugi Ban® range of charred timber cladding to projects across the UK and beyond. Inspired by the traditional techniques of wood preservation in Japan, our charring processes creates a desirable timber range.
In this article, we would like to recognise some of the ways in which our range of charred wood is used in projects. To showcase a range of possibilities, we focus on three of our regular customers; Real Doors, Into the Garden Room and BoBen Construction.
Charred Accoya® for Real Doors
Although the majority of our high-quality durable timbers are used for exterior cladding, they can be used for any joinery project. A great example of an alternative use is provided by Real Doors. This company combines the expertise of a professional joiner and accredited architect. They produce bespoke wooden doors of exceptional quality, to provide a contemporary finish to any property.
When sourcing materials that would provide secure, durable, thermally efficient and aesthetically-pleasing doors, they discovered Accoya®. Accoya® is a chemically modified wood. The process alters the physical, mechanical and biological properties of the timber. This can give fast-growing timber species, like pine, the equivalent strength, durability and resistance of a hardwood.
Real Doors are an Accoya accredited company. They offer 12 different Accoya® wood options, including our Shou Sugi Ban® charred Accoya® range. If you would like a grand entrance to your home, how about charred timber doors? For further information, check out the Real Doors website.
Charred Cedar Cladding for Into the Garden Room
Working from home, home-schooling and home entertainment – never before have we spent so much time in the same four walls! This has made us acutely aware of the need for more space. Into the Garden Room provide the opportunity to expand the available space, with bespoke-built garden rooms.
Bringing their client’s visions to life, they have crafted spectacular games rooms, gyms, tranquil sanctuaries and social spaces. Their constructions would certainly make an impressive home office; one with the easiest of commutes. Bi-folding doors and the charred surface of our cladding help these constructions to look perfectly positioned in outdoor spaces.
Into the Garden Room offer clients a choice of external cladding finishes. As craftsmen, their preferred option is working with cedar cladding. This is renowned as a durable, stable and resistant timber, with a highly-desirable finish. Their favourite is our Shou Sugi Ban® Cedar Brushed Flat Sawn Light Yama Yakisugi. Try saying that after an evening in the garden bar!
If you love the idea of a personalised, timber clad, garden room, take a look at the recently-published Into the Garden Room website. You will find plenty of inspiration on offer. Contact their dedicated team to discuss the range of timber finishes.
Timber Cladding for BoBen Construction
BoBen Construction builds high-specification, sustainable homes. They know that first impressions count, so the kerb appeal of the building has to be exemplary. When the architect’s plans include timber cladding, they source our Shou Sugi Ban® range for a quality finish.
One of the recent building developments created by BoBen Construction is a collection of timber clad residential dwellings in Warwickshire; Bilton Fields. Neighbouring a mature woodland and converted farm buildings, the homes needed to blend in with their surroundings. This was achieved with a combination of farmhouse brick, charred timber cladding and a zinc roof.
In addition to the beautiful exterior finish, the 4-bedroom properties include many features to ensure they are well insulated and thermally efficient. They may reflect historic barns, but these are homes designed to offer high-specification, modern living. You can view details of this and previous developments on the BoBen Construction website.
We are delighted to share the great news that the Bilton Fields project has been recognised with an award. LABC Warranty has honoured this building development with a Site Recognition Award. This achievement was given due to the high standards of construction and site management. Bilton Fields has now been entered into The Brick Award 2021.
