Cavity barriers are fire-stopping elements installed within the ventilated cavity of a rainscreen or EWI cladding system at regular intervals — typically at every floor level and around all openings — to prevent the cavity from acting as a chimney that allows fire and smoke to spread rapidly up the face of the building. Correctly specified and installed cavity barriers are a mandatory element of compliant external wall cladding systems in buildings over 11 metres.
