Surface Preparation
New wood surfaces
- Surfaces must be clean, dry and free of dirt, grease, grime and mildew.
- After cleaning, allow the wood to dry 48 hours or until it has reached a moisture content of 19% or less before finishing.
- New wood often has a hard shiny surface known as mill glaze that prevents maximum penetration; this and the moisture content of new wood prevents the proper adhesion of any coating.
- Initially, apply a coat of Seasonite, and allow the wood to weather a minimum of 6 months.
- After 6 months apply Shed and Fence Paint.
Weathered wood surfaces
- Uncoated wood surfaces that have weathered longer than six months require thorough cleaning before applying a finish.
- Use Net-Trol (according to label instructions), along with a pressure washer or stiff bristle brush to remove the loose fibre, dirt and other surface contaminants. If necessary sand the wood (100 grit).
- Surfaces must be free of dirt, grease, grime, mildew and previous coatings.
- After cleaning, allow the wood to dry 48 hours or until it has reached a moisture content of 19% or less before finishing.
Previously coated surfaces
- Sand or scrape to remove all loose flaking or peeling finish. If necessary strip with Dilunett and neutralise with Net-Trol.
- Surfaces must be free of dirt, grease, grime, mildew and previous coatings.
- After cleaning, allow the wood to dry 48 hours or until it has reached a moisture content of 19% or less before finishing.
- NOTE: Cedar, Redwood and Hardwoods may darken with Dilunett. If this occurs brighten with Net-Trol before proceeding. On Oak and Chestnut, manually or mechanically sand the wood, dust off and wash with Net-Trol to clean.
