We manufacture cladding and decking for construction projects across the globe. However, we love to supply to local builds or renovations. That’s because it increases our chances of seeing the finished design. Therefore, we were delighted that Millboard® cladding was specified by local architect, Nick Wood, in the latest upgrade to Queens Park Arts Centre in Aylesbury.
Introducing Queens Park Arts Centre
In 1980, a former infant school was renovated and opened as a community centre for arts by a passionate and determined team. They wanted a venue where people of all ages, artistic abilities and backgrounds could come together to develop skills, share ideas and get involved. Over the years, new facilities have increased the opportunities and range of arts on offer at Queens Park Arts Centre.
Major refurbishments were undertaken in 2010-2012, but development continues to help maintain and upgrade the building. Recently, this included a transformative development of the dance studio and annexe building.
The architectural design includes a contemporary atrium which leads to state-of-the-art dance facilities and a changing room, the pottery kiln room, storage for the energy-efficient heating plant and an accessible toilet. Previously this was a separate wing, but these spaces now integrate into the main building. What’s more, an internal ramp improves access and movement through the space.
One of the challenges for the architect was creating a suitable finish for the extension. It needed to blend the new exterior with the range of building materials and styles that have been used over time. To create a timeless finish, the architect specified Millboard Cladding.
What is Millboard Cladding & Decking?
Millboard® is a composite board used for cladding and decking. It contains no timber, yet highly-detailed moulding and painting give it the look and texture of natural wood grain. Developed and manufactured in the UK, it can be a practical alternative to timber cladding and decking.
Exterior Solutions Ltd is an approved UK distributor for Millboard cladding and decking. The boards are finished in a range of natural colours. For this project, we supplied Smoked Oak Millboard® which replicates the soft, neutral grey of weathered timber.
Why Use Millboard Composite Cladding and Decking?
Millboard® is formed from a high percentage of recycled materials, combined with a polymer resin, which is cast in oak moulds. As a result, the solid boards are lighter-weight than timber, yet they are strong and stable. It is a practical solution for high-traffic areas in commercial and public buildings like the arts centre.
Millboard is suitable for internal and external use. Unlike natural untreated timber, it is weather and rot-resistant and there is minimal colour fade when exposed to light. Composite boards do not warp or splinter and they aren’t easily scratched or dented through normal wear and tear. What’s more, algae doesn’t grow on the surface.
Once installed, Millboard® cladding or decking requires minimum maintenance. Simply sweep away loose debris as required, then clean with warm soapy water to remove dust. This will keep it looking as good as new for decades.
Points For Consideration with Composite Boards
There are plenty of reasons to choose composite boards, however, there are a few factors to be aware of.
Installation
Firstly, as moulded on real oak planks, Millboard® planks are not perfectly straight. The ends can be trimmed to achieve the desired angle and gap adjustments are used to straighten them during installation. Any cut ends must be finished with edgings or treated with a protective finishing coating.
Secondly, although you need nothing more complex than a carbon-tipped saw blade, power drill and measuring tools to work with this construction material, we advise that installation is always undertaken by experienced professionals. We provide installers with links to installation guides for Millboard® cladding and decking.
Thirdly, when installed, you may notice that the finish is glossier than expected and holds globules of rain. This is due to a protective seal to minimise damage during shipping, storage and installation. It will naturally wear off in 6-8 weeks.
Surface Features
Unlike natural timbers, composite boards can’t dissipate heat. As a result, they can become very warm on a hot, sunny day. Although this isn’t a common issue in the UK, it does mean that if your decked area is a suntrap, it can be uncomfortable for people or pets to walk on with bare feet. And, while we’re talking about heat, it is not advisable to stand BBQs and fire pits directly on Millboard® decking. For one thing, stray embers can mark the surface.
Although the surface is scratch-resistant, boards can be damaged by sharp objects and impacts. For this reason, care must be taken during installation. Equally, when used as decking, take care when moving garden furniture; lift, don’t drag!
Composite or Timber Cladding?
Do you view composite as a practical solution for your building development or renovation? Or do you believe that nothing replaces the natural character and properties of timber cladding? Both options are responsibly sourced, high-quality options which can be used to elevate the look and feel of a building.
As suppliers of both options, we can provide samples and quotes to help architects and clients make an informed decision. Simply call us on 01494 711800 or email sales@exterior.supplies
