As part of a successful refurbishment and new build at Ewell Grove Primary School; ShouSugiBan® were commissioned to manufacture charred cladding for the building façade.
This contemporary design is a reflection of the existing Arts and Crafts-style of the existing building. It modernises the building and pays homage to such an intrinsically detailed design. Moreover, the standard of the build was of discernible quality and the detailing of the charred cladding was beautiful.
The charred timber was a clever match to the traditionally handmade stock bricks. The deep hues of blue-grey and splashes of the white added a vibrancy to the façade.
A charming building with an existing style of simple framed elements in the same elevation has been matched within the charred panels.
Karl Harrison was asked, “Can you match the cladding with the same material machined into complementary parts?” The answer was a resounding “Of course, Jambs, heads and cills, we can also do all of the framings you require; same material, same finish too”.
The detailing by the Architects at HLM was exact. The materials were supplied to match that high specification. Many clients’ expectations are of a simple and rustic product because the timber is burnt when in fact it’s the opposite. The charred timber products from Exterior Solutions Ltd are exact and usually specified to fine tolerances; bespoke profiles and many finishes. Furthermore, these are all manufactured for each individual project for the specialist trims, edges, drips or façades.
ShouSugiBan® is manufactured in the UK by Exterior Solutions Ltd. They have been commercially manufacturing since 2009. They’re the creators of this modern technique. They have, as of writing this, over 45 finishes over 6 timber species (more ranges to follow later in 2019).
